BOX OF MATTER
A MONTHLY COLLECTION OF SCIENTIFIC ARTIFACTS
WHAT IS MATTER
You, everything around you, every star you can see in the sky, and every creature on every planet that ever existed are all made of tiny structures of particles that form all visible pieces of our universe. We call everything made of these particles “matter”. But as vast as our universe is, only about 0.04% of the known universe is made of this matter.
Almost all of the matter that makes up this thin sliver is spread across the universe, entirely out of our reach. Of the matter that is accessible to humans here on Earth, most of it comes in relatively unimpressive forms like air, water, and dirt (these things are all important, but quite common here).
But matter can be quite interesting. For example, fossils, ferrofluid, and fluorite are all made of the same types of particles but in a special configuration, which results in wildly different and fascinating properties. Our box of MATTER is designed to explore this relationship of all things, and the infinite possibilities our universe has to offer.
WHAT YOU GET
We'll ship you a monthly box with an assortment of materials, objects, specimens, or artifacts that have been carefully selected as some of the most fascinating pieces of accessible matter in our universe. Update: starting in 2020, each month’s artifacts will be curated according to a unique monthly theme. All items will include an informative card describing what make that piece of matter impressive. Use this as a starting point for your own research. Part museum, part lab project, these items will feed your curiosity or help spark someone else's interest in all things matter.
After all, you are matter.
