Trinitite - 430 mg
Trinitite - 430 mg
Small specimen of trinitite from the Los Alamos site of the first atomic bomb detonation test—the Trinity Test.
During the Trinity Test, the atomic bomb blast melted the top layer of the New Mexico desert. As it fused, it embedded a radioactive signature unique to the blast, thus the unique material is identifiable.
It is now illegal to collect material from the Trinity site, and the US government has attempted to bury the glassy remains of the site. However, it was once a hot spot for collectors and these pieces remain in circulation.
It is mildly radioactive but safe to handle. This sample was acquired from a mineral collector who'd glued it to a foam board. The foam was disintegrating when we got it, allowing the trinitite to fragment, so we removed the foam and preserved it in this capsule for our collection of the elements.
Glass vial containing 430 mg of material.
☢ Radioactive Material ☢ Not for kids. Handle responsibly.
Measures 0.24 μSv/hr; about 2x normal background radiation at our lab.
