Water Buffalo Tooth
Water Buffalo Tooth
The water buffalo, Bubalus bubalis, is a large bovine that has been domesticated for thousands of years and revered for its significant role in agriculture and culture across Asia and beyond.
These robust animals are classified into two main types: the river and swamp buffalo, each adapted to different environmental niches. Notably, their dental structure plays a critical role in their ability to thrive in diverse environments.
Unlike many mammals, they lack upper incisors, having instead a tough, keratinized pad against which the lower incisors cut vegetation. This efficient dental arrangement enables them to feed on a variety of plant materials, from coarse grasses to aquatic vegetation, facilitating their role as grazers in the ecosystem.
Moreover, their strong, broad molars are essential for breaking down fibrous plant material, ensuring effective digestion and nutrient absorption. This dental adaptability is key to the water buffalo’s resilience.
