Item #190
This fossil is the calcified remains of a coral polyp, which lived in the warm, shallow seas that covered parts of the planet as far back as 488 million years ago, during the Paleozoic Era.
Unlike their modern counterparts, horn corals had a solitary existence, growing individually rather than as part of a reef. Their signature horn-like shape is not just aesthetically striking but serves as a natural time capsule; the concentric growth rings on their calcified skeletons can reveal the coral’s age, much like tree rings. During its life, tentacles emanated from the horn for capturing prey.
Rugose corals serve as important index fossils, aiding in the stratigraphic correlation of geological formations. Their fossils are also considered indicators of paleoenvironmental conditions, providing data on sea level, temperature, and water chemistry of ancient marine ecosystems. The well-preserved morphological features of fossilized horn corals offer a compelling combination of aesthetic beauty and scientific significance, encapsulating millions of years of Earth’s marine history.
One horn coral fossil displayed in an acrylic case. A great addition to any fossil collection.
