Shark fossils other than teeth are quite rare. These
are the fossilized bones of a prehistoric shark’s spinal bones.
Shark skeletons are made of cartilage rather than bone. Cartilage is the same material that forms your nose and ears. It is softer and more flexible than bone, which makes it less likely to fossilize. Occassionally, however, under just the right conditions, areas of denser cartilage have been found to fossilize.
These 25 million year old bones formed the spinal column of a shark. Connecting tissue would have extended through slits in the side.
Otudus was the dominant genus in the locality of these fossils for millions of years. Teeth and vertebrae are all that have been identified of this shark.
Shark vertebrae have even been found in landlocked regions of North America, evidence of an ancient seaway that once split the continent.
Two shark vertebrae (one large and one small) displayed in an acrylic case.
A perfect addition for your fossil collection.
