This fibrous ball was part of one of the largest and oldest organisms on Earth- a clonal colony measuring 5 miles wide and around 100,000 years old.
Posidonia oceanica, also called Neptune grass, is a seagrass species that is native to the Mediterranean Sea. It forms underwater meadows that are a crucial part of the ecosystem.
This ancient plant can soak up 15x more carbon dioxide every year than a similar sized piece of the Amazon rainforest. They are home to hundreds of species of fish and the foundation of coastal food webs.
Seaweed balls are formed from the Neptune grass' foliage, and wash up to nearby shorelines.
They can bring with them debris including plastics that they have trapped along the way, helping to clean the sea in the process.
*Please note, this listing is for one neptune ball. Small sizes range from approximately 1" in diameter to 1.5", large sizes range from 1.75" to 3" in diameter.
