Boron's atomic number is 5 and its symbol is B. Boron is a metalloid that can be found in elemental form naturally in meteoroids. It is mostly used in compound forms as an additive to make things such as fiberglass, high-strength ceramics, and fertilizers. Its name comes from the mineral that it was first isolated from, “borax”. Boron is essential for the growth of plants and therefore all life. In 2017 boron was detected on Mars. The boron in these acrylic cubes was obtained as pure crystals. Although boron is a relatively common element here on Earth, producing pure boron is a cost-intensive process. This results in a price of around $600/lb for pure boron.
