Dragon’s Blood is a red resin released by several species of “dragon trees” when the bark is cut, cracked, or damaged.

This reaction is part of a highly effective wound- response system: the resin hardens within minutes, sealing exposed tissue and forming a chemically hostile barrier against insects, fungi, and bacteria.

This defensive strategy has proven remarkably successful. Dragon trees are among the longest-lived plants on Earth, with some individuals surviving for over 1,000 years. The resin’s high concentration of stable phenolic compounds, allows the hardened material to remain intact for decades or even centuries after formation. The striking red color likely evolved as a chemical byproduct rather than a signal, yet it has made dragon trees one of the most visually arresting examples of plant defense chemistry.

Humans have found many uses for dragon’s blood, including wood stain—famously on violins—as well as in traditional medicines and mummification.
