Berkelium's atomic number is 97 and its symbol is Bk. It is a silvery-white, highly radioactive metal, chemically reactive, and oxidizes slowly in the air. There is currently no use for any isotope of berkelium outside basic scientific research. It is named after the city of Berkeley, California, the location of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (then the University of California Radiation Laboratory) where it was discovered in December 1949. This display is contained within crystal clear Lucite acrylic.
