A SINGLE IMAGE FROM CINEMA’S LARGEST FILM FORMAT

This film frame is from a nature documentary shot using the proprietary IMAX film format. Each cell has been carefully preserved in a protective, displayable frame.

Ever since motion pictures were first created, the industry has continually invented ways to further impress audiences. One of these improvements was the IMAX system which allowed screens to be much bigger and visually impactful than standard film. But achieving this simple upgrade took a great deal of engineering.

Every step, from shooting the film to projecting it, requires special equipment and an incredible amount of work. For example, to project an IMAX feature film, up to 60 reels have to be spliced together to create one continuous film that could be over 10 miles long. Even the projector itself is massive and requires a special vacuum system, compressed air systems, and a water-cooled quartz bulb.

Like most cinema, IMAX has largely converted to digital projection, which has eliminated many of these technical challenges. The trade-off however, is the maximum resolution of an IMAX digital picture is estimated to only be 1/4 of IMAX film.

Although film has no pixels, experts commonly estimate that a well-exposed 15/70 IMAX negative contains detail comparable to approximately 18K digital resolution (or roughly 300 million pixels).

Protip: To get a good look at your film, pull up a white screen on your phone and hold the frame over it with brightness all the way up.

Every film cell is unique. You may not receive the exact frames pictured, but similar ones from the same film according to the subject you select.

The film is really great quality and super cool! The plastic cover it's in was pretty scratched up for me and had some fuzz or pet hair stuck inside of it. I would take it apart to clean it out but the screws seem to be stripped on one side. Overall though a really neat gift for film lovers or nature gurus
