Tektite

Tektite

17 total reviews

    Item #174

Tektites are formed when meteors collide with Earth. The material ejected from the impact crater is heated and fused into glass.

This batch of tektites are from the Australasian strewn field, which covers the area within the blue region in the map below and is estimated to have been caused by an impact 790,000 years ago.

All Australasian tektites have a similar chemical composition, which is why they are thought to be from the same impact. The location of the impact crater is still unknown, but a recent study suggests it may have been discovered in Laos.

You will receive one Australasian tektite. All are ~1-2 cm. Some have smooth concave surfaces formed by air pockets. Color is nearly opaque black.

The photos are an average representative of our current inventory. You may not receive these exact specimens, but some like them. We try to prioritize the largest specimens to ship first.

    Quality specimen, super cool!

This was a really nice specimen of Tektite and came packaged very well! Shipping was super fast too. I have purchased several fossils/rocks/minerals from this shop and all of them have been high quality.

    Not so big

A tip to get coffee was requested
    I acquiesced.
I ordered one large piece of tektite. It was small. As big as my thumbnail. I was slightly disappointed. But it’s alright. No coffee next time!
