Published in 1987 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the National Geographic Society, this substantial illustrated volume chronicles a century of exploration, scientific discovery, photography, cartography and adventure associated with one of the world's most recognizable scientific institutions.

Founded in Washington, D.C. in 1888, the National Geographic Society became an important supporter and popularizer of geographical and scientific exploration. Its expeditions, researchers and photographers brought distant landscapes, archaeological discoveries, wildlife and cultures into millions of homes, while its distinctive yellow-bordered magazine became an icon of twentieth-century science communication.

Author C.D.B. Bryan traces this history through the people and expeditions behind the Society, including its early leadership under Gardiner Greene Hubbard and Alexander Graham Bell and the generations of the Grosvenor family that subsequently shaped National Geographic. The book covers polar exploration, archaeology and ancient civilizations, natural history, ocean exploration, aviation, spaceflight and the development of National Geographic's influential photographic tradition.

Published specifically for the Society's centennial, the book contains hundreds of historical and color photographs drawn from National Geographic's extensive archives. At 484 pages and approximately 12 inches tall, it is a substantial visual history of a century of scientific exploration.

Most notably, this copy remains unopened in its original publisher's shrink wrap, more than three decades after publication. The original retail price sticker of $26.39 also remains attached to the rear shrink wrap.
