A solar flare is a sudden burst of intense energy from the Sun’s surface, caused by the release of magnetic energy stored in its atmosphere. Think of it like a cosmic lightning strike—fast, powerful, and bright. These bursts can last from minutes to hours and emit radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to X-rays and gamma rays.
What Causes Solar Flares?
The Sun’s surface is a boiling, magnetic environment. Beneath its visible surface (the photosphere), plasma is constantly moving due to convection currents. This movement twists and tangles the Sun’s magnetic field lines.
When these twisted magnetic fields suddenly snap and reconnect—a process called magnetic reconnection—they release enormous amounts of energy. That’s the flare.

- Astronaut and satellite hazards – High-energy particles can damage electronics and increase radiation exposure.
- Auroras – Charged particles interacting with Earth’s magnetic field can produce spectacular northern and southern lights.
How Often Do They Happen?
Solar flares are more common during the solar maximum—the peak of the Sun’s 11-year activity cycle. Right now, we’re approaching a period of higher activity, meaning more flares and geomagnetic events are likely in the coming years.
