Decades before terms such as “citizen developer” became common, Martin was already describing layered systems in which users could progress from simple database inquiries and calculators to report generation, graphics, decision support, and eventually full application generation without working directly in conventional programming languages.
The illustrated “Levels of Sophistication” diagram is particularly revealing: its progression from electronic mail and database inquiry through graphics, reporting, decision support, application generation, and high-level languages anticipates many ideas now built into modern business software and visual development platforms.
The book also documents a transitional moment in computing history. Its examples include technologies such as COBOL, PL/I, Query-by-Example, IBM systems, IDMS, NOMAD, database query languages, minicomputers, terminals, and early information centers—a world in which interactive computing was expanding rapidly but personal computing had not yet transformed the workplace.
Today, Application Development Without Programmers is useful both as a vintage computer-science reference and as a historical artifact from the period when the software industry was beginning to reconsider who should be able to create computer applications.
