Cerium's atomic number is 58 and its symbol is Ce. Cerium is often found with other rare earth elements in various minerals. Despite it being classified as a rare earth metal due to its position on the periodic table, it is more common than lead or tin. Its most common uses are in gas mantel lamps, polishing compounds, catalytic converters, or ferrocerium rods. Cerium tarnishes slowly in the atmosphere which is why the sample in this display is stored inside an argon-filled glass ampule.
